Hey, I need you to listen to this and I need you to tell everyone. Shout it from the rooftops.
You a special and unique and so are your migraines. And you need to be treated as such and your migraines need to be treated as such.
Hi, I'm Dr Beth, osteopath here in Melbourne Headache Solutions.
I get asked quite frequently “why is it that I get dizziness?” “why is it that I am getting like pressure in my head?”, “why is it that I get nausea?”, and “why am I vomiting?”
Basically, you are unique. You are special, your brain interprets things differently. Some people will get nausea as their predominant symptom, as well as their head pain. Other people will get vomiting. Other people will get really intense light sensitivity, whereas other people will just have pounding head pain that won't go away. Other people will have a hemiplegic migraine and other people will get a vestibular migraine. In terms of why you get one versus the other, it's because your brain is interpreting the series of factors that have contributed to your migraines in a certain way and has just presented these symptoms like that. You can start off with having a certain type of migraine, say a classic migraine with head pain, nausea and light sensitivity, and can develop and turn into a vestibular migraine over time. You may start with a classic migraine and then you may get auras over time. You might start off with tension-type headaches and then may develop migraines over time. That thing is that they can change.
In terms of why you get one and then why it either changes or why you present one way and then your friend presents another way, it's because you're unique and your body interprets things in different ways than other people. You also have different factors that are contributing to and causing your migraines.
Some people will have stress or anxiety that are contributing to their migraines. Other people will have their gut health as a major component that is contributing to their migraines. Other people also have really serious clenches and grind and so their jaw will be a major component. A lot of people have a neck component to their headaches and migraine. But other people are significantly lacking in supplements –they're nutritionally deficient. So, we really need to boost that element. For other people, it's their hormones. They have really got to attack their hormones. And for a lot of people, it's a multitude of things that are contributing to their headaches and migraine. So, it's about finding the right combination of things to determine what is causing your migraines and what's contributing to your migraines because your combination is different to the next person's combination and is different to the next person's combination.
As I said, you're unique, you're special. You're different to the person who's next to you. Hence, your migraines are different to the person next to you who is experiencing migraines. So, treatment for your migraines should look different to the person who's next to you. If they're not, then that's where we're falling down. That's why migraine treatments tend to fail.
So, if we're just going through the process of treating the symptoms, giving pain medications as required medications and giving preventative medications that aren't designed for migraines, then it's just like following a recipe that goes, “Okay, all migraines look the same, all migraine sufferers experienced the same sort of things.” No, this is why people tend to get migraines again and again, and again and again, or it works to a certain degree. Because you're different to the next person, to the next person, and the next, some people experience fantastic relief from these things in which case I am so happy. I am so happy because I'm all about people just experiencing relief, getting changes to their migraines, but ultimately what we need to do is to address what's causing and contributing to the migraine attacks.
That’s it. You're special. You're unique. You need to be treated as such and find out what's contributing, causing to your migraine attacks.
